The python anciently was an important animal in other parts of the Philippines as well. In other areas this design is called "minminata" or many eyes, representing the eyes of the ancestors watching over you. One other interpretation is that it represent the skin of the rattan fruit and a fertility symbol. The idea that it is a honeycomb was started by foreigners.
