Chapter 34 Five Fangs
The battle had become chaos. Smoke rolled through the streets of Valerienne, swallowing entire buildings beneath thick clouds of black and grey. Flames crawled across rooftops, devouring wooden balconies and sending burning tiles crashing into the streets. The air reeked of ash, blood, scorched leather, and molten iron. Broken carts lay overturned across the cobblestones. Dead horses blocked narrow passages. Abandoned shields and shattered weapons littered the streets, while the wounded cried out beneath the thunder of battle. Kingdom soldiers fought desperately to contain the remaining Baalanian infiltrators. The enemy had been driven toward the central square, but the Baalanians were not ordinary invaders. They were hardened desert warriors, men raised beneath merciless suns and tempered by generations of warfare. Their bronzed skin was covered in scars, their muscular bodies wrapped in dark desert robes reinforced with leather and metal. Some were enormous, heavily armored fighters carrying curved blades and brutal axes. Others were lean, exceptionally quick warriors who moved with the precision of desert predators. And nearly all of them possessed enchanted weapons or some degree of fire magic. Blue and orange flames danced along their blades. Their magic burned with the intensity of the desert itself. They regarded the people of Elyria as infidels, unworthy of equality or freedom. Their purpose was conquest, subjugation, and conversion. Surrender was merely another word for submission. The commander stood at the centre of the square He was a towering man wearing bronze-plated armor beneath torn black robes. Desert tanned skin and his thick forearms were covered in glowing runes, and a curved sword burned in his right hand. Flames crawled across his armor like living serpents. Around him stood the surviving Black Guard. Twelve warriors. Their formation was battered, but they maintained a disciplined defensive circle. The commander surveyed the approaching figures through the smoke.
Five silhouettes emerged. A towering knight carrying a radiant greatsword. A slender figure dressed in flowing white robes. A tall, veiled mage carrying a carved staff. An enormous grey-skinned orc wielding a monstrous double-headed axe. And a red-haired squire with a sword and shield.
The commander's eyes narrowed.
"The five monsters," he muttered.
Gor'Thrak cracked his thick neck.
"Five?"
His tusks appeared beneath a wicked grin.
"You counted correctly."
Celestine stepped into the square. His silver armor was blackened with soot, and several scratches marked his breastplate. His long platinum hair hung loosely around his shoulders, moving in the hot wind. In his hands rested Lueur Sainte. The greatsword's silver runes glimmered. Golden-white light pulsed along its edge. Behind him, Snowy landed silently on the roof of a nearby building. His long black hair flowed down his back, and his white robes fluttered like banners in the wind. His moon-silver eyes studied the battlefield. Tahir stood several paces away. His layered black desert robes were covered in dust, and his carved staff rested against his shoulder. Blue flames flickered faintly around the charms hanging from his clothing. Gor'Thrak tightened his grip around Vorrak-Duum. The enormous axe seemed almost alive in his hands. Its two heavy blades reflected the burning buildings. Beside him stood Roan.
The young squire's fingers tightened around his sword. His heart was pounding. He could hear the screams. He could smell the smoke. He could see the dead lying across the street. He was afraid. But he did not step back.
The commander raised his burning sword.
"Another band of infidels!"
His voice echoed across the square.
"You have interfered with the will of Baalania for the last time!"
Gor'Thrak spat onto the cobblestones.
"Funny. I was thinking the same thing."
The commander gestured.
The Black Guard immediately spread apart.
Three warriors moved toward Celestine. Four positioned themselves against Gor'Thrak. Two began chanting magical incantations. The remaining soldiers moved toward Tahir and Roan. Above them, archers climbed onto the surrounding rooftops.
Celestine glanced at his companions.
"Snowy, take the"
He stopped.
Snowy was already moving. Three glowing owls appeared above the street.
Tahir had planted his staff against the ground.
Gor'Thrak was already advancing.
Roan had drawn his sword.
Celestine smiled.
He didn't need to tell them.
They knew. For the first time in a long while, he wasn't commanding soldiers.
He was fighting beside friends.
"Very well," he murmured.
"Let's finish this."
Snowy Takes the Sky A Baalanian archer released his arrow. The projectile cut through the smoke. But it struck nothing. The white figure standing on the rooftop had disappeared. A small snowy owl shot through the air. Its wings barely moved. Snowy weaved between two arrows, twisted around a chimney, and plunged toward the archer from above. The soldier barely had time to turn. A flash of white. A tremendous impact. The archer was knocked clean off his feet. Snowy's owl form landed on the rooftop railing. Despite its delicate appearance, the magical creature possessed extraordinary strength. A second archer swung his bow like a club. Snowy launched himself forward. The impact sent the man's weapon flying. Before the archer could recover, Snowy transformed in a flash of moonlight. His human form appeared in midair. His long black hair streamed behind him.
He extended one hand.
"by the moonlight"
Three enormous, luminous western barn owls materialized around him. Their bodies were formed from brilliant white light, their wings edged with silver-blue radiance. They spread apart immediately. One soared toward the western rooftops. Another dived toward the enemy archers. The third circled above the central square. Snowy raised two fingers.
"Scatter."
The owls moved. The first slammed into an archer's chest. The second intercepted a volley of arrows, swallowing the projectiles in a burst of shimmering light. The third plunged into a cluster of Black Guard soldiers.
BOOOOM!
A sphere of white radiance erupted across the rooftop. The soldiers were thrown backward. Snowy landed on a narrow balcony. His robes settled around his legs. Below him, two Baalanians raised their crossbows.
"Die, witch!"
They fired simultaneously. Snowy tilted his head. A crescent-shaped barrier of moonlight appeared before him. The bolts struck it.
CRACK!
The magical shield fractured, but held. Snowy swept his arm sideways. The barrier dissolved into dozens of razor-thin luminous feathers.
"Return."
The feathers shot downward. The crossbows were sliced apart. The soldiers stumbled backward, clutching their disarmed weapons. Snowy extended his right hand. A long silver-white whip materialized around his wrist. The Light Whip snapped through the air.
CRACK!
It wrapped around a soldier's ankle. Snowy pulled. The man flew off his feet and crashed into two companions. A fourth soldier rushed up the stairs behind him. Snowy heard the footsteps. He ducked. A curved blade passed over his head. He spun around, allowing the Light Whip to coil around the attacker's sword arm. A sharp pull. The sword flew from the man's grasp. Snowy stepped forward and struck his chest with a concentrated burst of moonlight. The soldier crashed against the wall. Snowy looked down toward the central square. His three Light Owls were still fighting. One intercepted another magical projectile. The second attacked the enemy archers. The third circled above Celestine. Then Snowy saw a Baalanian warrior preparing to strike the knight from behind.
His eyes narrowed.
"Celestine!"
The knight turned.
But he was already moving.
A curved blade descended toward his neck.
CLAAAAANG!
Lueur Sainte intercepted it. Golden sparks exploded between the weapons. Celestine pushed the attacker backward.
Snowy landed beside him.
Celestine smiled.
"You're welcome."
Snowy returned the smile.
"I knew you would."
Celestine laughed.
"That's becoming dangerous."
A second Baalanian charged.
Snowy flicked his wrist. The Light Whip cracked around the soldier's waist.
Celestine stepped forward.
One clean strike with Lueur Sainte.
The soldier's weapon shattered, and the man collapsed unconscious.
"Shall we?" Celestine asked.
Snowy nodded.
"After you."
The Sand Mage and the Unbreakable Wall
On the opposite side of the square, Tahir was surrounded. Five Black Guard warriors approached him. Their robes were reinforced with bronze plates, and blue flames burned along their curved swords.
One of them laughed.
"Another infidel sorcerer."
Tahir remained perfectly still.
His veiled face revealed nothing.
"How predictable."
The first warrior lunged.
Tahir tapped his staff against the ground.
"Rise."
The cobblestones trembled. Sand erupted from the cracks in the street. A massive wave of golden-brown sand surged upward. The attacking warrior disappeared beneath it. Two others attempted to leap over the rising mass. Tahir rotated his staff. The sand changed direction. Two enormous arms formed from the swirling material and seized them in midair. The warriors struggled. Their enchanted swords burned through the sand, but the constructs immediately regenerated.
Tahir closed his fist. He said in anceint Teheletian
"Sand Prison."
The arms contracted. The soldiers were dragged downward and buried to their waists. Another warrior attempted to circle behind him. Tahir noticed the movement without turning. A thin blade of sand shot from the ground. It struck the man's sword.
CLANG!
The weapon flew from his hand. Tahir raised his staff. He recited in ancient Teheletian language
"Blue Flame."
A brilliant blue fireball erupted from its tip. It shot across the square. The soldier barely managed to raise his shield.
BOOOOM!
The shield shattered. The warrior was hurled backward and crashed into a wooden stall.
Tahir turned toward the remaining enemies.
"Gor'Thrak."
The orc understood immediately.
He charged.
"HA!"
Vorrak-Duum rose above his shoulder. The first Black Guard soldier attempted to escape the sand prison. Too late. Gor'Thrak brought his enormous axe down.
KRAAAAAASH!
The weapon struck the ground. The shockwave rippled across the square. Cobblestones shattered. The trapped soldiers were thrown violently aside as the sand prison collapsed around them.
Gor'Thrak continued forward.
A warrior swung a flaming sword toward his ribs. The orc twisted his torso. The blade scraped across his armor. Gor'Thrak barely noticed. He seized the man's arm. Then he headbutted him.
CRACK!
The warrior collapsed. A second attacker charged from the side. Gor'Thrak swung Vorrak-Duum horizontally. The enormous weapon smashed into the soldier's shield. The shield buckled. The soldier flew backward and crashed through a stone fountain.
Gor'Thrak roared.
"IS THAT ALL?"
Three warriors answered.
They attacked simultaneously. One struck high. Another aimed for his legs. The third thrust his burning blade toward Gor'Thrak's chest. The orc stepped backward. He caught the first attack against the haft of his axe. He kicked the second warrior in the chest. Then he twisted his weapon and knocked the third attack aside. His counterstrike swept across the street. The two remaining warriors were thrown against a nearby wall.
Tahir watched from behind his staff.
"Try not to destroy my battlefield."
Gor'Thrak looked at the destruction.
Then at Tahir.
"Your battlefield?"
Tahir's eyes narrowed.
"Yes."
Gor'Thrak grinned.
"Then you should have built it stronger."
The orc charged again.
Tahir sighed.
"Of course."
But the mage was already raising his staff.
A wall of sand surged behind the remaining Baalanians.
It curved around them, forming a towering enclosure.
The warriors looked around. Their escape route had vanished.
Gor'Thrak approached.
His axe dragged across the cobblestones.
A shower of sparks followed him.
"Nowhere to run."
The Assassin in the Shadow
A Baalanian captain noticed Tahir's attention was divided. He was lean and muscular, with bronze armor beneath his dark robes. Unlike the other soldiers, he carried two curved daggers. He moved quickly. Very quickly. He slipped between the fighting soldiers and approached Tahir from behind. His daggers glowed with enchanted fire. He smiled beneath his desert veil. An easy kill. He lunged. But his blade struck nothing. Tahir's shadow moved. A second figure emerged from it. Tareq.Twin blades flashed.
CLANG! CLANG!
The captain staggered backward. Tareq had intercepted both daggers. The two fighters exchanged a rapid series of strikes. Steel flashed. Sparks scattered. The Baalanian attacked with a high slash. Tareq ducked and drove his shoulder into the man's abdomen. The captain staggered. Tareq's left blade struck his wrist. The dagger fell. The second blade stopped against the man's throat. For a moment, the two stared at each other.
Then Tareq whispered:
"Wrong shadow."
He struck.
The captain collapsed.
Tahir glanced over his shoulder.
"You're late."
Tareq wiped his blade.
"You're welcome."
"Did you find anything?"
"Two spellcasters. One commander. One scout."
Tahir's eyes narrowed.
"The scout?"
"Still watching."
Tahir looked toward the rooftops.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
The commander suddenly broke through the fighting. His flaming sword carved through a kingdom soldier's shield. He struck again. The soldier fell. The commander continued forward. His attention had shifted toward a group of civilians trapped near a collapsed building. A mother was desperately trying to pull her injured child from beneath a wooden beam. Two elderly men struggled to move the debris.
The commander raised his sword.
"Your kingdom cannot protect you!"
Roan saw him.
His heart stopped.
He was too far away.
Celestine was fighting three Black Guard soldiers.
Gor'Thrak was surrounded.
Tahir was maintaining his sand prison.
Snowy was above the rooftops.
Nobody could reach them in time.
Roan ran.
"NO!"
The commander's sword descended.
Roan threw himself forward.
CLAAAAANG!
His training sword intercepted the flaming blade. The impact nearly tore the weapon from his hands. His feet slid across the cobblestones. His knees buckled. But he held. The commander looked down. A red-haired boy. A small sword. A frightened face. The Baalanian laughed.
"Is this what Elyria sends to protect its people?"
He pushed harder.
Roan's arms trembled.
The heat from the enchanted blade burned against his face.
"You are a child."
Roan gritted his teeth.
"I'm a squire."
The commander laughed.
"That is worse."
He suddenly twisted his sword. Roan's blade was knocked aside.
A brutal kick struck the boy's chest.
WHAM!
Roan flew backward. He crashed against the cobblestones and rolled. His training sword nearly slipped from his grasp. The commander approached.
Flames crawled along his curved blade.
"Your people should have surrendered."
Roan slowly pushed himself upright.
His chest hurt. His arms were shaking. But he looked toward the civilians. The mother was still trying to free her child. The commander raised his sword.
Roan remembered Celestine's lessons.
Don't fight strength with strength.
Watch. Wait. Move.
The Baalanian attacked. Roan ducked. The blade passed over his head. He stepped inside the commander's reach and struck the man's wrist with the pommel of his sword. The commander grunted. Roan immediately kicked his knee. The armored warrior staggered. Roan struck again. His training sword slammed against the commander's forearm. The flaming sword slipped from his hand. It spun through the air. Roan caught it by the hilt. The heat burned his palm. He nearly dropped it. But he forced himself to hold on long enough to throw it away. The weapon landed several meters away. Roan turned toward the civilians.
"RUN!"
The mother dragged her child free. The elderly men helped her move. They hurried into a nearby alley. Roan exhaled. He had done it. Then he heard footsteps. Behind him. He turned. The commander had recovered. His expression was murderous.
"You little worm!"
The man swung his fist.
Roan raised his shield.
CRAAACK!
The impact shattered its wooden outer layer. Roan was thrown backward. But before the commander could strike again A massive grey hand seized his wrist.
Gor'Thrak. The orc towered over the Baalanian.
"Leave the pup alone."
The commander struggled.
Gor'Thrak tightened his grip.
The armored wrist began to creak.
The commander stared up at him.
Gor'Thrak smiled.
"You're fighting the wrong family."
Then he threw the man across the square.
The commander crashed through a wooden cart.
Roan stared.
Gor'Thrak looked down at him.
"Still breathing, pup?"
Roan nodded.
"Yes."
"Good."
The orc turned toward the battle.
"Try not to get yourself killed. Your sword arm is still too skinny."
Roan looked at his arm.
Then at Gor'Thrak.
"That's not very encouraging!"
Gor'Thrak laughed.
"Wasn't supposed to be!"
The commander rose from the wreckage.
His armor was glowing. The runes covering his bronze plates began to burn brighter. A deep rumbling sound emerged from his chest. The flames surrounding him intensified. Orange fire became blue. Blue became white. The air distorted. The remaining Black Guard immediately retreated. One of them shouted.
"Commander! Your armor!"
The commander ignored him.
His body began releasing tremendous waves of magical heat.
Flames exploded outward.
BOOOOOOM!
The shockwave tore through the square. Gor'Thrak was thrown backward. He crashed into the remains of a fountain.
Tahir immediately thrust his staff into the ground.
"Sand Barrier!"
A massive wall of compressed sand erupted before the others.
The explosion struck it.
CRAAAAASH!
The wall buckled. Cracks spread across its surface. Tahir gritted his teeth.
"That is considerably stronger than before."
Snowy appeared overhead. Moonlight gathered around his hands. He extended both arms. A shimmering dome formed above the nearby civilians and wounded soldiers. The next wave of flames struck. The dome flashed silver-white. Its surface rippled. But it held. Celestine stepped forward. Golden light flickered around Lueur Sainte. Roan stood beside him. His training sword was damaged. His shield was almost destroyed. But he remained standing.
The commander laughed.
"Look at you!"
He spread his arms.
"Five pathetic creatures standing against the might of Baalania!"
Gor'Thrak emerged from the shattered fountain.
He spat out a piece of stone.
"Still talking."
Tahir raised his staff.
"Unfortunately."
Snowy descended.
His three Light Owls circled above him.
Tareq appeared beside Tahir.
His twin blades reflected the burning square.
Celestine looked at his companions.
Five figures.
Five different powers. Five different paths. He could feel the battle changing. He could feel their trust. He didn't need to shout orders. He simply nodded. Snowy smiled faintly. Tahir adjusted his grip on his staff. Gor'Thrak rolled his shoulders. Roan raised his sword. They moved.
Snowy's Light Owls attacked first. Three luminous white birds descended from the smoke. Their wings spread wide, illuminating the square.
The commander raised his sword.
"Burn!"
A circular wave of fire exploded from his body.
The first owl was consumed. The second banked sharply, avoiding the flames. The third plunged straight through the magical inferno. Its body flickered. Its wings shattered into brilliant feathers. The feathers surrounded the commander. He swung his sword. A dozen luminous fragments exploded against his armor. The commander staggered.
Snowy extended his hand.
"Now."
The second Light Owl swept behind the commander. It released a concentrated beam of moonlight. The beam struck his back.
BOOM!
His armor flashed. He dropped to one knee. But before Snowy could continue, the commander slammed his sword against the ground. A pillar of fire erupted beneath him. The Light Owl was swallowed by the flames. Snowy immediately raised a barrier. The fire struck.
CRACK!
A fracture appeared across the shield. Snowy narrowed his eyes.
"Persistent."
Tahir stepped forward. His staff struck the ground.
"Sand Prison!"
The earth beneath the commander erupted. Massive coils of sand wrapped around his legs. Another rose around his waist. A third seized his sword arm. The commander roared. Fire surged through the restraints. The sand began turning to glass.
Tahir's eyes narrowed.
"Interesting."
The Baalanian commander tore one arm free.
The glass shattered.
He raised his burning sword.
"Your tricks will not"
Gor'Thrak charged.
The orc's enormous axe swept through the air.
"MOVE!"
The commander barely managed to raise his sword.
Vorrak-Duum struck.
KRAAAAAAANG!
The impact shook the square. The commander's weapon bent. His feet left the ground. He flew backward, dragging the remaining sand restraints with him. Before he could recover, Gor'Thrak brought his axe down again. The commander rolled aside. The axe smashed into the street.
Stone exploded.
Gor'Thrak followed with a brutal shoulder charge.
The commander was sent crashing into a broken stone column. The column collapsed. But the Baalanian was not finished. He emerged from the debris.
His armor was now burning like a furnace. He swung his sword. A crescent of fire raced toward Gor'Thrak. The orc raised Vorrak-Duum. The flaming crescent struck the axe.
BOOOOOOM!
Gor'Thrak was driven backward. His boots carved trenches through the stone.
"HA!"
He grinned.
"Now that's a fight!"
The commander charged.
Gor'Thrak met him head-on.
Their weapons collided again and again. Steel against enchanted bronze. Fire against brute strength. Each collision sent sparks and shockwaves across the square.
But Gor'Thrak was not alone.
Tahir raised his staff.
"Wind!"
A powerful current struck the commander's side.
His footing shifted. His sword swung too wide.
Gor'Thrak immediately twisted his weapon.
Vorrak-Duum smashed into the commander's breastplate.
CRACK!
One of the bronze plates broke. The commander staggered.
Snowy's Light Whip appeared. It snapped around the man's sword arm.
"Roan!"
The squire understood.
He rushed forward.
The commander tried to turn. But the Light Whip pulled his arm backward.
Roan slid beneath the sweeping movement of the commander's other arm. He kicked the fallen flaming sword farther across the square. The weapon skidded beneath a broken cart. Roan turned. The commander's eyes widened.
"What are you?"
Roan raised his training sword.
His voice was trembling.
But he spoke clearly.
"A Fang."
The commander roared.
He tore through Snowy's Light Whip. The magical strand burst into silver fragments. He lunged toward Roan. But a golden-white blade appeared between them.
CLAAAAANG!
Celestine. Lueur Sainte held the commander's enormous enchanted fist-like gauntlet strike against its radiant edge.
Golden light erupted.
The commander was forced backward.
Celestine's eyes were calm.
"Enough."
The Unicorn Blessing awakened. Golden-white radiance surrounded his armor. A luminous aura expanded behind him. For a brief moment, the burning square seemed to grow brighter than daylight. The commander froze. He could feel it. The purity of the enchantment. The power of a sacred vow. The unmistakable presence of something his fire could not easily consume. Celestine raised Lueur Sainte. His voice echoed across the square.
"By the light that protects the innocent..."
Golden runes ignited along the greatsword.
"By the oath I carry..."
A radiant circle appeared beneath his feet. The remaining flames around him bent away.
"By the lives you sought to destroy..."
The commander attempted to move.
Tahir's sand restraints tightened. Snowy raised both hands. His three Light Owls reappeared around the enemy. Gor'Thrak planted Vorrak-Duum into the ground. Roan stood beside Celestine. Five Fangs. One pack. Celestine's eyes shone
"DAWN'S JUDGMENT!"
He swung Lueur Sainte. A colossal wave of golden-white energy erupted from the blade. The entire square vanished beneath its brilliance. The light surged forward like a descending sunrise. It engulfed the commander. It swallowed the remaining flames. The Black Guard were hurled backward. Their weapons flew from their hands. The magical runes on their armor shattered. A tremendous explosion shook the surrounding buildings.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
For several seconds, there was nothing but light.
Then silence.
The radiance faded.
Smoke drifted across the square.
The commander's armor lay cracked and blackened. His sword was broken. He collapsed onto his knees. Then fell forward. Unconscious. The remaining Baalanian soldiers stared at the five figures. Their commander had fallen. Their formation was destroyed. And the warriors who had stood against them were still standing.
Gor'Thrak lifted his axe.
"Anyone else?"
Nobody answered.
The Last Soldier
The kingdom's soldiers quickly surrounded the defeated infiltrators. Some Baalanians surrendered. Others were unconscious beneath the rubble. The remaining Black Guard were disarmed and forced to their knees. Celestine lowered Lueur Sainte. His breathing was heavy. The golden aura slowly faded. Snowy landed beside him. Tahir examined the battlefield. Gor'Thrak rested Vorrak-Duum against his shoulder. Roan stood nearby, staring at the broken remnants of his shield. He had survived. More importantly, he had protected those civilians. But Tahir noticed something.
His eyes narrowed.
"Where is the scout?"
Celestine turned.
"What?"
"The scout. I saw him earlier."
Snowy looked toward the rooftops.
Then his expression changed.
"There!"
A dark figure moved across the roof of a nearby building.
The Baalanian wore a black desert cloak and carried a leather satchel.
He was running.
Snowy transformed instantly.
Moonlight enveloped his body.
A small white owl shot into the sky.
"Stop him!" Celestine shouted.
Snowy accelerated.
The scout leaped across a narrow alley.
Snowy followed.
The owl flew between two chimneys.
The Baalanian glanced over his shoulder.
He raised a small enchanted dagger.
Then threw it.
Snowy twisted in midair. The dagger passed beneath his wing. Another projectile followed. A Light Owl materialized beside him. The glowing creature intercepted the dagger.
BOOM!
A flash of light illuminated the rooftop. The scout continued running. He reached the outer wall. Snowy transformed back. His long black hair streamed behind him as he extended his right arm.
"Not fast enough!"
A silver strand shot across the distance. It wrapped around the scout's ankle. Snowy pulled. The man fell. His body slid across the rooftop. For one second, Snowy had him. Then the scout drew a small enchanted blade. Its runes glowed red. He slashed downward. The Light Whip shattered. Snowy's eyes widened. The scout rolled over the edge of the wall. Snowy transformed again and plunged after him. But the man had already reached a waiting horse outside the city. He landed hard. Scrambled into the saddle. Then kicked the animal forward. Snowy flew after him. The horse raced toward the forest. The scout released a smoke bomb that slowed Snowy down. The scout disappeared between the trees. Snowy continued for several moments. But the distance was growing. The Baalanian scout released another smoke bomb and dissapred from sight. Snowy tried to look where he might have gone, He eventually turned back. When he returned to the square, his expression was troubled.
"He escaped."
Tahir looked toward the forest.
"What was he carrying?"
Snowy hesitated.
"A scroll."
Tahir's eyes darkened.
"Of course."
The Missing Information The Luminous Fangs gathered around the captured equipment. Kingdom soldiers had collected the Baalanian satchels, weapons, and documents. Tahir immediately began examining them. He opened one of the leather bags. Inside were several pieces of parchment. Ancient symbols. Maps. Coordinates. He spread them across a broken stone table.
Celestine approached.
"What have you found?"
Tahir didn't answer immediately.
His fingers traced the markings. One parchment contained a map of the surrounding kingdom. Another depicted a dense forest.
A third contained several strange symbols.
Then he found a familiar name.
Garthuun.
His expression hardened.
Roan leaned forward.
"They knew about Garthuun?"
Tahir nodded.
"They knew before we arrived."
Gor'Thrak frowned.
"How?"
"That is what I intend to discover."
Snowy examined another parchment.
His moon-silver eyes narrowed.
"These aren't ordinary military maps."
Tahir looked at him.
"No. They are survey documents."
He pointed toward several markings.
"These locations are not settlements. They are ancient sites. Ruins, magical structures, perhaps even buried sanctuaries."
Celestine studied the parchment.
"Then the attack was never simply about capturing Valerienne."
"Correct."
Tahir rolled the parchment closed.
"They were gathering information."
Gor'Thrak growled.
"About the ruins."
"Yes."
Snowy looked toward the dark forest where the scout had escaped.
"And now Baalania knows we found them."
Nobody spoke.
The implication was clear.
The Baalanians were not merely reacting to the Luminous Fangs.
They had been investigating the same ancient mysteries. And somewhere beyond the kingdom's borders, their commanders were waiting for information. The escaped scout might already be carrying their discoveries back to Baalania.
Celestine looked toward the horizon.
The smoke above Valerienne was beginning to thin. The sun was setting. The battle was over. But the war was far from finished. Five Fangs, One Pack The five gathered in the ruined square. For several moments, nobody spoke. Roan looked at the others. He had fought beside them. Not as a messenger. Not as a helpless child hiding behind stronger warriors. He had stood against a commander. He had protected civilians. And when the time came, the others had trusted him to play his part.
Gor'Thrak approached and placed one enormous hand on his shoulder.
"Not bad, pup."
Roan looked up.
"Really?"
"Don't let it go to your head."
Roan smiled.
Snowy approached and gently examined the damage to his shield.
"You did well."
Roan looked at him.
"Was I too reckless?"
Snowy considered the question.
"A little."
Roan lowered his eyes.
"But you saw someone in danger and acted. That matters."
The young squire smiled.
Tahir rolled the parchment and secured it beneath his robes.
"We should assume the Baalanians will come looking for us."
Celestine nodded.
"They will."
Gor'Thrak grinned.
"Good."
Tahir glanced at him.
"That was not an invitation."
"Sounded like one."
Snowy chuckled.
Celestine looked at his companions. His armor was damaged. His cloak was torn. His sword was stained with soot. Yet something inside him felt lighter. For so long, he had believed that leadership meant carrying every burden himself. Every decision. Every failure. Every life he could not save. But today had reminded him of something. He wasn't alone. He looked at the others. Snowy, whose eyes saw what others overlooked. Tahir, whose knowledge could unravel mysteries buried for centuries. Gor'Thrak, whose strength stood between danger and those he loved. Roan, whose courage grew even when fear threatened to overwhelm him. And himself. Five different people. Five different paths. Yet somehow, they had become something greater together.
Celestine tightened his grip around Lueur Sainte.
"Then let them come."
Gor'Thrak smiled, revealing his tusks.
Roan raised his sword.
Snowy's moon-silver eyes reflected the fading firelight.
Tahir stood silently, his staff resting against the stone.
Behind them, the kingdom's soldiers began clearing the streets. The wounded were carried to safety. The fires were extinguished. The dead were gathered. Valerienne had survived. But somewhere beyond the kingdom's walls, a Baalanian scout was carrying their secrets into the darkness. And now the enemy knew something else. The Luminous Fangs were no longer five strangers brought together by circumstance. They were a force. A family. A pack. And they had become dangerous. Celestine looked toward the distant horizon. The last light of the setting sun disappeared beyond the rooftops. For a moment, the five stood together amid the ruins of the battlefield. Five warriors. Five powers. Five Fangs. One pack. And somewhere beyond the horizon the next battle was already waiting.
