Zhang Linghe is currently at the center of a major debate regarding who holds the title of the "most beautiful" or "most handsome" man in China and one of the most beautiful faces in East Asia

Zhang Linghe has become a modern symbol of androgynous and delicate beauty, a standard that is both deeply rooted in Chinese history and highly controversial in today's media. In 2026, his appearance in Pursuit of Jade ignited a national conversation about whether male leads have become "too pretty" for the roles they play.

Imagine waking up one day and your biggest problem is… being too good-looking. Not “oops I forgot my keys” or “I sent an email with a typo,” but “sorry, you’re distractingly beautiful, please tone it down.” That’s basically the situation here.

It’s like being told, “Hey, could you maybe try being less symmetrical? Your face is causing productivity issues.” Or, “We love your work, but your cheekbones are stealing focus from the plot.” Somewhere, there’s probably a meeting where people are seriously discussing how to deal with someone whose jawline has its own fanbase.

Zhang Linghe is currently at the center of an intense debate over who deserves the title of the most handsome man in China. This conversation reached a fever pitch in early 2026 following his massive success in the drama Pursuit of Jade. His sharp, symmetrical features have led many fans and critics to compare him to Yang Yang, who has long been considered the industry's visual "gold standard." This rivalry has essentially turned into a "visual showdown" to see if Zhang has finally claimed the top spot in East Asia.

However, his looks have also sparked controversy, particularly regarding his role as a military leader. Critics nicknamed him the "Foundation General" because they felt his makeup was too perfect and polished for a gritty war setting. This triggered a larger debate in the Chinese entertainment industry about whether dramas are prioritizing "pretty faces" over realistic acting. In response, Zhang has started taking on more rugged roles to prove he is more than just a visual icon.

Despite the criticism, his popularity is undeniable. He has secured over 20 major luxury endorsements with brands like Gucci and Lancôme, proving that his "visual power" translates into massive commercial success. While he now consistently ranks alongside top stars like Xiao Zhan and Song Weilong in beauty polls, the debate continues as fans weigh his flawless modern aesthetic against the more traditional charm of his peers.

Criticized for being too Beautiful 

Being criticized for being too pretty is a very specific kind of struggle. You can’t exactly respond with, “Don’t worry, I’ll fix it,” unless there’s a setting to downgrade your face to “average NPC.” And even if you tried messy hair, oversized hoodie, zero effort somehow it would just start a new trend.

It’s also funny how this kind of “problem” flips the usual script. Most people spend time trying to look better, and here comes someone getting notes like, “Could you be slightly less stunning? Maybe aim for ‘pleasantly forgettable’?” Imagine practicing in the mirror: “Okay, today I’ll try to look… mildly unimpressive.”

At the end of the day, though, it’s one of those ironic situations where the “criticism” says more about everyone else than the person receiving it. If someone’s looks are causing this much discussion, maybe the real issue isn’t their face it’s that people can’t stop staring at it.

The criticism against Zhang Linghe is often seen as unfair because much of what people complained about was actually just him being faithful to the character. In the original novel, the general is specifically described as having "skin like jade" and refined features. By looking "too beautiful," Zhang was actually fulfilling the author's vision rather than making a mistake. Additionally, many fans point out that Zhang naturally has very pale skin and sharp features, so the "over-the-top" look wasn't just makeup it’s his natural appearance. It feels like a double standard to attack an actor for his biology, especially when the entire production chose a stylized, high-contrast look for every character, not just him. Finally, the backlash is often viewed as a narrow take on masculinity. Defenders argue that a general can be both handsome and a powerful warrior, and that the "Foundation General" label ignores his performance in favor of mocking his style. To many, he was simply caught in the middle of a larger debate about beauty standards in Chinese dramas.

Yamato nadeshiko (やまとなでしこ or 大和撫子)

Yamato nadeshiko (やまとなでしこ or 大和撫子) is a Japanese term meaning the "personification of an idealized Japanese woman", or "the epitome of pure, feminine beauty"; poised, decorous, kind, gentle, graceful, humble, patient, virtuous, respectful, benevolent, honest, charitable, pious, faithful

to most Westerners Meaning she is certainly excellent wife material

Yamato is a poetic way of referring to Japan, while Nadeshiko is a flower that grows in the Japanese highlands. Yamato Nadeshiko together can mean “Flower of Japan” in loose, lazy translation, but what it really refers to is the ideal woman, the epitome of feminine beauty and grace. Yes, as you may have heard already, Yamato Nadeshiko is the idealized Japanese woman that was established around the Meiji Restoration, meaning 19th century Japan.

The Yamato Nadeshiko appearance wise generally have long, black hair styled into a Hime cut (see picture above), but in anime the hair colour can also be shades of blue. They should be of medium height, pale-skinned, modestly endowed, beautiful but not unrealistic or lewd,  they also should have clear and calming voices. The Yamato Nadeshiko ideally dresses in adult, traditional fashion, preferably in a Kimono.

Personality wise the Yamato Nadeshiko heavily draws from Confucian woman ideal. In case you don’t know anything about Confucianism, let me give you a quick summary. Confucianism is philosophy/religion that originated from China from the ancient philosopher known in the West simply as Confucius who lived around 500 B.C.

Confucianism, along with Taoism and Buddhism are one of the 3 biggest cultural and religious influences on the Islands of Japan, which affects their culture and behavior even to this day. (Reading up on these 3 philosophies/religions will help you see anime and Asian media in a completely new light, and generally give you a lot of meta knowledge and additional understanding.)

Being a yamato nadeshiko revolved around the Confucian concepts of Feudal Loyalty and Filial Piety, which in the latest wave of Confucian revival meant acting for the benefit of one's family and obeying and assisting authority figures (father, husband, sometimes father-in-law or older brothers, as well as older and/or more respected females). Virtues include(d) loyalty, domestic ability, wisdom, maturity, and humility.

This is a Japanese ideal, so it might seem strange to westerners, but don't be fooled; the nadeshiko is a wildflower at heart. A properly done yamato nadeshiko will show a subtle, but definitely present, touch of iron, in that she is unwilling to let circumstances hurt the ones she cares about or distract her from her goals or missions. This is often accomplished so subtly that the target isn't certain how things got redirected — a subtle influence of Politeness Judo if you will. Older yamato nadeshiko are better at this, while a younger one will make up for it in determination — especially when it comes to the man she loves because that trumps everything else

Anyway Confucianism is a very traditional and conservative philosophy, that stems from the fact that Confucius believed that humanity’s golden age, was in the past, and seeking to return to the past is the only way to stop the process of human degradation. Confucius emphasized the duties within the unit of the family, the duty of the father, the mother, the son etc. Each having their unique roles and duties.

The most important personality traits of the Yamato Nadeshiko is her unwavering loyalty, sense of duty and caring, motherly nature. The ideal Japanese Woman places the well being of her family, husband and children over her own interests and generally respects authority figures, be that the government, or the husband in the family. Other virtues include domestic ability, humility, maturity and wisdom.

In anime this typically makes the Yamato Nadeshiko a submissive character, especially towards her love interest and her family.

But this by no means mean that the Yamato Nadeshiko must be a weak character. In fact a good Yamato Nadeshiko should be like a fierce bear mother who will protect and defend her family at all costs should danger arise, even if she has to commit crimes or other heinous acts to fulfill that goal.

IN ANIME a  Yamato Nadeshiko aside from her housewife skills would protect anyone, seeing I didn’t describe her as the most menacing character type. The answer to that is that Yamato Nadeshiko are also usually Onna Bugeisha (Female Weapons Master), who have more than enough training and weapons to protect the ones they care about. The reasons for this combination is also cultural. Before the feudal caste system was abolished, Yamato Nadeshiko were typically daughters of samurai caste, who were taught in the arts of war, literature and martial arts, most commonly trained in the mastery of a Naginata or a Bow.

After the feudal classes were dissolved, the samurai families essentially became middle class rich people, but their daughters retained the same skills, charm, elegance and virtues that they were taught in the old era. And when these daughters would marry a man, tales of the Yamato Nadeshiko would spread far and wide.

   What does a yamato nadeshiko character look like?

The following are some of the common physical features shared by many yamato nadeshiko characters in anime and manga (based on my own biased opinion).

   Black Hair

First of all; the hair. The hair color of most yamato nadeshiko characters seems to be either black or black with just a small hint of color in it.

   Long Hair

Besides most characters having healthy looking black hair, a lot of them wear their hair long.

   Kimono

In most works that feature yamato nadeshiko characters, there is a high chance that they will either be wearing a kimono or have a scene where they put on a kimono and look completely transformed.

In real life however, the term can also be used for women who prefer to wear western style clothes. It is not necessary to always wear a kimono to be considered a yamato nadeshiko.

However please note that this combination is not always used, the Yamato Nadeshiko doesn’t necessarily have to be an Ojou-sama or an Onna Bugeisha, this cliché mostly refers to personality, virtues and behavior more than anything else.
