Iron Reign Volume V characters

 Dr. Faust Steel Full

Name: Dr. Faust Steel

Age: Unknown  appears to be in his late 40s

Occupation: Scientist, weapons engineer, military researcher, field operative

Affiliation: United Wasteland / Iron Oath Classification: Highly Restricted Personnel

Appearance Faust Steel is a tall, slender, strikingly handsome middle-aged man with short, neatly styled blond hair. Despite his apparent age, his face is almost unnaturally well-preserved. There are few wrinkles, no visible physical deterioration, and his blue eyes remain unnervingly sharp behind thin, futuristic glasses. He dresses almost entirely in different shades of grey. His clothing resembles a strange combination of military uniform, laboratory attire, and futuristic formalwear. His long grey coat has subtle metallic seams running through it, while his gloves and boots contain technology that isn't immediately recognizable as conventional Iron Reign equipment. Unlike most Iron Soldiers, Faust doesn't wear bulky armor. He doesn't seem to need it. He carries himself with the confidence of someone who already knows exactly how dangerous everyone around him is.

 Personality

Faust is cold, analytical, calculating, and extremely difficult to read. He rarely raises his voice. He doesn't need to. When everyone else is panicking, Faust becomes quieter. He approaches combat the same way he approaches an experiment: observe, calculate, test, adapt. He has little patience for emotional decision-making and can come across as arrogant or even cruel. To Faust, feelings are important data but they are still data. Interestingly, he dislikes being called a coward. Many soldiers assume that because he's a scientist, he avoids the battlefield. They quickly learn otherwise. Faust is an exceptionally capable fighter, possessing strength, speed, reflexes, and combat instincts far beyond what his slender appearance suggests. He doesn't fight like a brawler. Every movement is deliberate. He wastes nothing. Not a punch. Not a step. Not a bullet. Energy Manipulation Faust's right hand contains an artificial energy-generation system. When activated, faint lines of blue-white light travel underneath his skin before concentrating around his palm. He can fire concentrated energy blasts powerful enough to tear through armored targets. He can also use the energy system at close range, concentrating it around his fists to dramatically increase the force of his strikes. His fighting style therefore combines scientific precision with brutal hand-to-hand combat. His favorite approach is ironically simple: Get close. The Scientist Everyone Underestimates Faust is frequently dismissed by soldiers because of his profession. He's a scientist. He's a researcher. He's a man who spends his days around laboratories and machines. Therefore, surely he isn't a real warrior. Faust finds this amusing. He has personally survived situations that would kill ordinary Iron Soldiers and possesses an intimate understanding of military technology, genetics, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and biological enhancement. There are rumors among the highest levels of the Iron Reign that Faust's work is responsible for some of the greatest technological achievements in United Wasteland history. There are even whispers that he was involved in the original creation of the Steelborn program. Faust never confirms this. Whenever someone asks, he simply adjusts his glasses and says: “You're asking the wrong question.” The Secret Faust is far older than he appears. Much later, people begin noticing inconsistencies. Old military photographs contain references to Faust. Very old research documents contain his name. Scientists who supposedly worked with him decades ago describe him exactly as he looks now. Eventually, the truth becomes horrifying. Faust Steel isn't actually walking around in that body. His apparent body is an advanced android an extraordinarily sophisticated synthetic body designed to perfectly imitate a living human. The body is essentially Faust's remote-operated vessel. His real body exists somewhere else, hidden in a heavily protected facility. The Faust everyone encounters outside the United Wasteland is essentially a drone controlled by the real Faust. This explains why he's willing to undertake missions that should be suicidal. He isn't risking his real body. He's risking a machine. And Faust has absolutely no emotional attachment to the machine. If it gets destroyed, he'll simply build another one.

Winterson Steel

Full Name: Winterson Steel

Designation: Neo Steelborn Prototype / Unit two
Apparent Age: Early 20s
Actual Age: Unknown

Occupation: Soldier / Experimental Super-Soldier

Affiliation: United Wasteland / Iron Oath

Appearance

Winterson is a very tall, exceptionally muscular young man with broad shoulders, a powerful physique, and striking platinum-blond hair parted neatly down the middle. His face is almost absurdly handsome. He looks like someone designed a propaganda poster of the perfect United Wasteland soldier. Except Winterson doesn't act like one. When first introduced, he wears pure white clothing, making him look almost completely out of place among the Iron Reign's grey-and-black military aesthetic. Later, once he begins operating in the field alongside Faust, he changes into grey clothing matching Faust's distinctive style. This becomes an understated visual connection between the two. Soldiers initially assume he's Faust's son. The resemblance isn't obvious enough to prove it, but there is something strangely similar about them.

 Personality

Winterson is the complete opposite of Faust. He is innocent, naïve, curious, emotional, and incredibly easy to impress. Despite being an enormous, powerful super-soldier, Winterson sometimes behaves like a little kid. He gets excited about food. He asks ridiculous questions. He doesn't understand sarcasm. He becomes fascinated by ordinary objects. He can stare at something as mundane as a vending machine for several minutes because he's never seen one before. He also has an almost comically literal understanding of things. If Faust says: “Don't touch that.” Winterson will stand there staring at it. “Why?” “Because it will explode.” “Oh.” Five minutes later: “Faust?” “Yes?” “Does it explode if I touch it with a stick?” Faust slowly removes his glasses. “No.” “Okay.” “Because I removed the explosive.” “Oh.” Despite his childish behavior, Winterson isn't stupid. He's simply young. Much younger than everyone believes.

Powers and abilities

Energy Absorption Winterson possesses an unprecedented ability to absorb energy. His body can absorb virtually any form of energy directed toward him. That includes: Gunfire Explosions Heat Electrical energy Physical impacts Radiation Nuclear energy Magical energy Even magic which the Iron Reign considers anathema can be absorbed by Winterson. The energy doesn't simply disappear. His body stores it. And he can convert that stored energy into physical power. The more energy Winterson absorbs, the stronger he becomes. His strength, speed, durability, and reflexes can increase dramatically depending on how much energy he has accumulated. A normal gunfight therefore has the bizarre effect of making him stronger. An explosion that would kill an ordinary soldier can instead send Winterson charging out of the smoke with a grin. The Problem With Winterson Winterson doesn't fully understand his own abilities. He doesn't instinctively think of himself as a weapon. If someone shoots him, he might look down at the bullet hole and say: “Did you do that?” Then he'll look at the shooter. “Do it again.” The shooter probably regrets doing so. His greatest weakness isn't physical. It's naivety. Winterson trusts people easily. He doesn't understand why someone would lie to him. He doesn't understand why people fear him. And he doesn't understand why Faust sometimes looks at him with an expression that resembles regret. The Truth Behind His Creation Winterson isn't Faust's biological son. He's something much stranger. He was genetically grown in a laboratory. His genetic foundation comes from General Alaric Winter, one of the United Wasteland's greatest military figures. But Faust's own DNA was incorporated into the process. The result was intended to combine the physical potential of General Winter with Faust's genetic adaptations. Winterson became something neither man was. A one-of-a-kind superhuman. The ultimate evolution of the Iron Soldier concept. The first true success of the Steelborn project. And unlike conventional Steelborn candidates, Winterson wasn't slowly raised and conditioned. His body grew extraordinarily quickly. His physical development happened at an unnatural speed. His mind, however, didn't develop at the same pace. That's why there is such a strange disconnect between his appearance and personality. He looks like a fully grown super-soldier. Inside, he's still learning how the world works. The Hidden Hint There are subtle signs that Winterson is younger than he looks. He doesn't remember having a childhood. He doesn't understand references to historical events that happened only a few years ago. He sometimes asks questions that reveal he has no concept of basic human experiences. When someone asks him what he did when he was ten, he genuinely doesn't know how to answer. Eventually, someone realizes something terrifying: Winterson may not have existed ten years ago. His body simply reached adulthood extremely quickly. Faust & Winterson Their relationship is intentionally difficult to define. Everyone assumes Faust is Winterson's father. Winterson certainly treats him like one. Faust insists that he is not. But he never actually tells Winterson the truth. Faust is the cold, distant creator. Winterson is the innocent creation. Faust sees Winterson as the culmination of decades of research. Winterson sees Faust as the person who taught him how to exist. That creates a fascinating contradiction. Faust can look at Winterson and see a successful experiment. Winterson looks at Faust and sees family. And somewhere beneath all of Faust's calculations, there is the uncomfortable possibility that he has begun to see Winterson as something more than an experiment. Something he was never supposed to create. A son. And that may ultimately be Faust's greatest weakness.

Junkyard Dogs Unit

“Junkyard Dogs” aesthetic: over-equipped, underfunded, chemically enhanced, loud, muscular, and very much aware that command considers them expendable.

Sergeant “Big Red” Rourke

Sergeant “Big Red” Rourke

Appearance: Rourke is a massive, barrel-chested man with a shaved head, thick red beard, and arms that look like they were built for dragging vehicles out of ditches. His battered steel-gray armor has been repaired so many times that almost none of the original plating remains. He wears a red scarf underneath his helmet and has a permanent grease stain across his cheek.

Personality: Loud, bossy, and convinced he is everyone's father. Rourke gives unsolicited advice constantly, including during firefights. He's actually extremely protective of his squad. He'll complain about carrying someone's ammunition for ten minutes before silently carrying it for them anyway. Annoying habit: Calls everyone “kid,” including men older than him. Relatable side: He worries constantly about whether his squad will make it home, but disguises it as angry yelling.

Private “Doc” Elias Venn

Private “Doc” Elias Venn

Appearance:  Tall and muscular, but less bulky than the others. He has sandy blond hair, a thick mustache, and rectangular protective goggles permanently sitting on his forehead. His armor contains an absurd number of medical pouches. Despite being a combat medic, his armor is covered in kill marks.

Personality:  Sarcastic, cynical, and constantly irritated by everyone's stupidity. Doc has the unfortunate personality of someone who has been forced to keep idiots alive for too long. He'll save someone's life while insulting them. “Congratulations. You survived. Try not to make me do that again.” Annoying habit: Corrects everyone's terminology. Relatable side: He secretly cares about every member of his squad and remembers everyone's allergies, injuries, birthdays, and favorite foods.

 “Brick” Halden

Private First Class “Brick” Halden

Appearance: Brick is enormous nearly seven feet tall, with a thick muscular torso and disproportionately large arms. His helmet has a crude yellow stripe painted across it because, according to him, “yellow makes bullets respect you.” Nobody knows if he is joking. His armor is covered in dents, tally marks, and crude drawings of angry dogs. Personality: Not particularly stupid, but definitely not clever. Brick takes everything literally and asks incredibly inconvenient questions at the worst possible moments. He's cheerful, friendly, and almost impossible to anger. Annoying habit: Repeats jokes until somebody laughs. Relatable side: Brick is terrified of dying. He just doesn't like admitting it because everyone expects the giant man to be fearless.

“Lucky” Tomas Vale

Private “Lucky” Tomas Vale

Appearance: Compact, muscular, and covered in old scars. He has dark curly hair, a crooked nose, and a constant five-o'clock shadow. His armor is noticeably cleaner than everyone else's. Hanging from his chest plate are dozens of tiny metal charms spent shell casings, bolts, washers, and pieces of old machinery.

Personality: Superstitious, smug, and irritatingly optimistic. Lucky believes the universe has personally decided not to kill him. Every time something explodes near him, he says: “See? Still lucky.” Everyone hates hearing it. Annoying habit: Takes ridiculous risks because he believes he's invincible. Relatable side: He's actually terrified of losing his friends. His superstition gives him an excuse to pretend everything will turn out fine.

“Sarge” Jimmy Cross

Private “Sarge” Jimmy Cross

Appearance: Despite being only in his early twenties, Jimmy looks like someone twice his age. He's heavily muscled, with a square jaw, messy black hair, and tired blue eyes. His armor is covered with childish graffiti from his squadmates. Someone painted “DO NOT FEED” across his chest plate. He hasn't removed it.

Personality: Cocky, immature, obnoxious, and constantly trying to prove himself. Jimmy is the guy who volunteers for something dangerous before realizing what he volunteered for. He tells terrible jokes during combat and insists he's the squad's “morale officer.” He's also the youngest member and desperately wants the veterans to treat him like an equal. Annoying habit: Says “I've got this” immediately before making everything worse. Relatable side: Jimmy knows the Iron Reign considers his unit expendable. He pretends not to care, but secretly wants someone to tell him that his life actually matters.

Iron Oath Squad: The Black Mastiffs

Iron Oath Squad: The Black Mastiffs

"Loyal as hounds. Relentless as wolves. Unbreakable as steel."

The Black Mastiffs are a ten-man Iron Oath squad composed entirely of Iron Soldiers, the standard military forces of the United Wasteland. Unlike the genetically engineered Steelborn or the elite Heavy Metals, they are ordinary men who became exceptional through relentless training, discipline, and unwavering patriotism.

Like all Iron Soldiers, the Black Mastiffs carry regulated combat-enhancing stimulant pills. Before or during combat, they can take these pills to temporarily heighten their senses, dramatically improving awareness, reflexes, reaction time, pain tolerance, and battlefield performance. The effects allow them to fight at the edge of human capability without permanently altering their bodies. They are still ordinary humans just pushed to extraordinary limits through science and training.

Among the Iron Oath, they are respected as proof that courage and discipline can rival genetic enhancement. The Steelborn may be stronger, and the Heavy Metals may wield advanced war machines, but the Black Mastiffs are the soldiers most civilians see as the true face of the United Wasteland.

Every member was born in the United Wasteland and raised on its ideals. They genuinely believe they are defending humanity's last safe nation from the chaos of magic and the expansion of the Baalanian Empire. Off the battlefield they are known for repairing homes, helping farmers, protecting refugees, and sharing supplies with fellow citizens. To the people, they are heroes. To their enemies, they are relentless hunters.

The Black Mastiffs have served together for years, operating with such precision that veterans often joke they share a single mind.

Among the Iron Oath, there are dozens of famous squads, but none are spoken of with more respect than the Black Mastiffs. Named after one of the strongest guard dogs ever bred, the squad embodies the qualities the United Wasteland values most: loyalty, strength, discipline, and the willingness to die protecting their homeland.

The Black Mastiffs have fought together for nearly a decade. Every member was born in the United Wasteland, raised on its propaganda, and genuinely believes they are defending humanity's last safe nation. They are intimidating to enemies but surprisingly kind to ordinary citizens, often helping rebuild towns, carrying children to safety, and fixing broken machinery after battles.

Chromium wolves volume 4 chapter 25

ARC VI  ROAD TO ELYRIA

Chapter 25  Exiles

The battlefield had finally fallen silent. Hours earlier, the black dunes had shaken beneath the march of thousands. Fire had swallowed the sky. Blood had soaked the sands until they resembled crimson rivers winding through an endless desert. Now only smoke remained. Broken banners fluttered from snapped spear shafts. Dead war-beasts lay half buried beneath drifting dunes, their enormous armored bodies already disappearing beneath blowing ash. Burned siege wagons smoldered quietly. Bent swords, shattered shields, and broken arrows littered the battlefield like forgotten relics. Carrion birds circled overhead. The smell of blood mixed with hot sand and burned oil. Far away, the walking city continued its slow march toward the sacred kingdoms, as though the battle had never happened. Life moved on. War always did.

Lucien sat quietly atop a weathered sandstone ridge overlooking the battlefield. The morning sun had barely begun climbing over the eastern horizon, painting the endless desert gold. His borrowed cream-colored robes fluttered gently in the wind. They were stained with blood not his own. Fine desert dust clung to the hems. His dark hair, usually neat despite its natural messiness, had become tangled by wind and battle. Small scratches crossed his pale face. He looked exhausted. Not physically. Emotionally. His gray-blue eyes stared across the sea of bodies below without truly seeing them. Little Light had saved lives. But it had not stopped the war. Footsteps approached behind him. Heavy.Measured. The Kharathi warlord climbed the ridge slowly. His magnificent bronze armor had been battered by Noctis' assault. Entire sections were cracked. One shoulder plate hung loose. Fresh bandages wrapped his ribs beneath black silk robes. His great curved saber rested at his side once more. Despite everything... He still carried himself like a king. Bronzed, muscular and intimidatingly handsome. His amber eyes found Lucien.

"You should be resting."

Lucien smiled faintly.

"I could say the same."

The warlord chuckled quietly.

"My people would never forgive me if they discovered I allowed a guest to lecture me."

Lucien looked toward him.

"You almost died."

"So did you."

Silence settled between them. The wind carried grains of black sand across the ridge. Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally...

Lucien broke the silence.

"...Why?"

The warlord tilted his head.

"Why what?"

"You protected me."

"You barely knew me."

"You fought your own people."

"You stood against other warlords."

"You nearly died because of me."

The large man gazed toward the horizon.

"When I first found you..."

"...I believed you were simply another frightened traveler."

His voice remained calm.

"But then..."

"I watched men try to kill you."

"I watched you protect strangers."

"I watched you risk your own life..."

"...for people who were not your people."

He looked directly into Lucien's eyes.

"That is rare."

Lucien lowered his gaze.

"I wasn't protecting armies."

"I was protecting people."

The warlord nodded.

"I know."

More silence.

The desert never truly became quiet. Wind always whispered. Sand always moved. Somewhere below, workers had already begun gathering the wounded from both armies. Even enemies received water. At least here. A familiar voice echoed from farther down the ridge.

"So..."

Kael Mordren emerged from behind a cluster of boulders, casually twirling his katana before sliding it back into its lacquered black sheath. His infiltration robes were torn in dozens of places. One sleeve had been completely burned away. A fresh bandage wrapped around his forehead. Yet somehow... He still looked amused.

"I leave for ten minutes..."

"...and Ghostlight adopts a desert king."

Lucien laughed softly.

"I didn't adopt anyone."

The warlord raised one eyebrow.

Kael grinned.

"I'll allow the translation error."

Milo arrived moments later. Back in human form. He had cleaned most of the blood from himself, though faint scratches remained across his neck and arms. His weathered olive military coat rested over one shoulder. His gray eyes looked tired. Very tired. He carried a waterskin. Without speaking, he handed it to Lucien.

Lucien accepted it gratefully.

"Thank you."

Milo simply nodded.

No one mentioned the werewolf.

No one mentioned Noctis.

No one mentioned how close everyone had come to dying.

Some truths required no words.

Eventually...

Kael sighed.

"Well."

"I suppose this is the awkward part."

Lucien looked toward him.

"The awkward part?"

"The part where I remind you..."

"...that High Command wants you home."

The smile disappeared from Lucien's face.

Far below... The survivors continued clearing the battlefield. The morning sun rose higher. Its warm light reflected from thousands of broken weapons.

Lucien quietly asked,

"What happens if I return?"

Kael answered honestly.

"You'll be debriefed."

"Studied."

"Questioned."

"Probably promoted."

"You'll become the face of the Baalanian campaign."

"And then..."

"You'll be sent back."

Lucien closed his eyes.

"...Back to war."

Kael didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Lucien looked toward the walking city in the distance. Its immense silhouette crawled slowly across the desert like an entire mountain walking upon unseen legs.Beyond it... Lay Elyria. The continent the warlord had spoken about so many nights beneath the stars. A place of forests. Ancient kingdoms. Magic. Freedom. Places where children still laughed. Where monsters were not always enemies. Where history had not yet been buried beneath endless war.

The warlord finally spoke.

"I am leaving Baalania."

Kael blinked.

"...You're serious."

"I have been serious for many years."

"My homeland is no longer mine."

"The priests rule."

"The fanatics multiply."

"The warlords kill each other while calling it holy."

He looked toward Elyria.

"I have fought enough."

Lucien stared at him.

"You really mean to leave everything behind?"

"My titles."

"My lands."

"My soldiers."

"My family."

He smiled sadly.

"Most already consider me a traitor."

"I merely intend to become one officially."

The wind grew stronger. Black sand drifted between them like smoke.

Lucien thought of Darius.

Of Elias.

Of Orion.

Of everyone waiting for him.

He remembered the Iron Reign.

Its endless factories.

Its gray skies.

Its constant wars.

Then he remembered Baalania.

Beautiful.

Cruel.

Ancient.

Broken.

Neither felt like the future he wanted. Kael quietly watched him. He already knew. Before Lucien even spoke. Lucien slowly stood. He faced the distant western horizon.

"I..."

His voice almost failed him.

"...I don't want to go back."

Kael closed his eyes.

"I figured."

"I've been fighting almost constantly since I can remember."

Lucien continued softly.

"Everywhere I go..."

"Someone wants to turn me into a weapon."

"The Iron Reign."

"Baalania."

"The priests."

"The generals."

He looked at his own hands.

"They keep talking about Ghostlight."

"...No one asks what Lucien wants."

Silence.Then

"I want to see the world."

"I want to understand it."

"I want to find someplace worth protecting..."

"...before another war begins."

The warlord smiled.

For the first time since they had met...

It was a smile free of sorrow.

Kael looked toward the horizon. Then toward Milo. Milo merely nodded once. Almost imperceptibly. Kael laughed quietly.

"You two are making this very difficult."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"If I follow orders..."

"...I drag you home."

He looked at Lucien.

"If I follow my conscience..."

"...I let you disappear."

The desert wind howled between them. Kael rested one hand upon the hilt of his katana. For one long moment... No one knew what he would choose.

The eastern gate of the holy city stood open beneath the pale glow of dawn. Unlike the military gates of the Iron Reign fortified with steel, artillery, and blast shields the Gate of Molochia had been carved from a single slab of black volcanic stone. Two colossal statues flanked it. Both depicted Baalaniah Mehmeth, the legendary Demon King of Molochia, The sand Sultan who united the Kingdoms and other tribes who lived in the sands of Baalania long time ago, he who untied them under one relgion. The religion of expansion and domination. His stone face possessed calm, noble features beneath an elaborate bronze crown. A long braided beard reached his waist, while one hand rested upon an enormous curved sword planted into the earth. The other pointed east. Toward the deserts. Toward destiny. Thousands of pilgrims bowed as they passed beneath him. Some kissed the black stone. Others whispered prayers.

The warlord did neither.

Lucien noticed.

"You don't pray anymore."

The giant remained silent for several moments.

"I still believe."

His silver eyes drifted toward the statues.

"I simply no longer believe men speak for the gods."

The caravan slowly descended from the mountain roads. The siege beast remained behind. Its enormous body disappeared into morning mist while priests chanted blessings from its terraces. For the first time since awakening... Lucien was no longer walking atop a moving city. He stood upon real earth. The sensation felt strangely unfamiliar. Soft sand shifted beneath his boots. The wind carried warmth instead of the vibrations of colossal footsteps. It almost felt...Free.

Nearly fifty riders accompanied them. Most were veteran warriors personally loyal to the warlord rather than the priesthood. Unlike the fanatics Lucien had first encountered, these soldiers rarely shouted prayers or spoke of holy conquest. They rode quietly. Disciplined. Professional. Each wore practical black lamellar armor covered by dark traveling cloaks. Their curved sabers remained sheathed. Several carried long desert rifles across their backs. Others watched the surrounding dunes with practiced caution. Lucien gradually recognized familiar faces. The elderly physician. The laughing camel handler. The young scout who had once shared dried fruit with him. These were not strangers anymore. They were becoming companions. That realization unsettled him. By midday the caravan stopped beside an ancient oasis. Palm trees surrounded a pool of impossibly clear water. Birds sang. Dragonflies hovered above lilies. After weeks surrounded by ash and black stone... The place looked almost magical. Several soldiers removed their armor. Others watered the camels. The physician unpacked medical supplies beneath a canvas awning. Lucien knelt beside the water. His reflection stared back. Dark hair. Gray-blue eyes. A young man wearing foreign robes among desert warriors. He hardly recognized himself anymore. A shadow appeared beside him.

The warlord lowered himself onto a nearby stone with surprising grace despite his immense size.

"You miss them."

Lucien nodded.

"My friends."

"The Iron Wolves."

"My home."

"The bakery near the academy."

"The children who always followed me asking to see Little Light."

His smile faded.

"I miss everything."

The warlord listened quietly.

"I understand."

Lucien looked at him.

"No."

"You don't."

The giant smiled sadly.

"No."

"I suppose I don't."

For a long time neither spoke. The only sounds came from flowing water and distant laughter. Finally... The warlord reached inside his travel pack. He removed something wrapped carefully inside soft cloth. When he unfolded it... Lucien froze. A small carved wooden bird. Simple. Elegant. Its wings stretched wide as though ready for flight.

"I made this."

Lucien blinked.

"You carved?"

The warlord nodded.

"When I was younger."

"I wasn't very good."

Lucien gently accepted it.

The craftsmanship was imperfect.

One wing sat slightly crooked.

Tiny knife marks remained visible.

Yet...

It felt strangely precious.

"You kept this all these years?"

The giant nodded.

"It reminded me."

"Of what?"

He looked toward the eastern horizon.

"...that birds were never meant to live in cages."

Lucien stared at the little carving.

His fingers gently traced the rough wood.

Elsewhere... Far beyond the oasis... Another pair watched through brass spyglasses from a distant sandstone ridge. Kael lowered the lenses.

"There he is."

Milo nodded.

Lucien looked healthy.

Alive.

Laughing softly beside the warlord.

Kael sighed.

"I've never seen him smile like that."

Milo smiled faintly.

"He looks peaceful."

Kael looked irritated.

"That's the problem."

Neither moved. Neither raised a weapon. They simply watched. Kael finally broke the silence.

"If Headquarters asks..."

Milo finished the sentence.

"...we never found him."

Kael looked sideways.

"You serious?"

Milo kept watching Lucien.

"What happens if we force him home?"

Kael already knew.

"He stops smiling."

Silence.

The wind carried grains of black sand between them.

Finally Kael exhaled.

"Damn you, Lucien."

He smiled despite himself.

"You always make the difficult choices look simple."

Hours later... The caravan resumed its journey. Neither Lucien nor the warlord noticed the two hidden observers disappearing into the dunes. No report would be sent today. No pursuit. No ambush. Only silence. As evening approached... The desert slowly transformed. Golden dunes became crimson beneath the setting sun. Then violet. Finally silver beneath rising moonlight. Lucien rode beside the warlord once again. After many quiet minutes...

He spoke.

"When we reach Elyria..."

The giant looked toward him.

"...what will you do?"

The warlord smiled.

"I don't know."

"I've dreamed about it for years."

He laughed quietly.

"Strange, isn't it?"

Lucien tilted his head.

"I spent my whole life dreaming about escaping Baalania."

"You spent yours protecting Elyria."

"And now..."

"...we're both traveling toward a place neither of us truly knows."

Lucien looked toward the western stars.

"I think..."

"...that's what makes it worth seeing."

The warlord smiled. Amber eyes filled with hope and for the first time in many years... The road ahead no longer felt like exile. It felt like hope.
