Chapter 25 Beyond the World
The Frozen North, Part II
The Dragon King flew through the night.Far below, Middle Elyria slowly disappeared behind them. The familiar forests. The mountains. The roads. The kingdoms. Everything shrank beneath clouds and distance. Ahead lay a different world. A harsher world. A colder one. Toivo stood upon the dragon's back while icy wind rushed through his hair. His blue eyes remained fixed upon the northern horizon. Home. He had spent years believing he would never see it again. Now it waited just beyond the clouds. The Dragon King beat his wings once. Twice. The world changed. The forests below became larger. Darker. Older. The mountains grew sharper. More jagged. Snow appeared upon distant peaks. Then more snow. And more. Until entire mountain ranges gleamed silver beneath moonlight.
Gret stepped beside Toivo. The giant northman smiled.
"There."
Toivo followed his gaze. And finally saw it. North Elyria. His breath caught. It stretched endlessly across the horizon. Vast. Wild. Beautiful. The forests alone seemed larger than kingdoms. Ancient evergreen trees covered countless miles of land. Dark green beneath silver moonlight. Untouched by civilization. Untouched by time. Toivo remembered those forests. As a child he had once believed they stretched forever. Looking at them now he realized they almost did. The Dragon King descended slightly. The details became clearer. Frozen rivers glittered beneath the stars. Snow-covered hills rolled across the landscape. Massive lakes reflected moonlight like polished silver mirrors. The land felt alive. Ancient. Endless.
Gret crossed his arms proudly.
"The south calls itself civilized."
The giant warrior snorted.
"They've never seen the North."
Kev emerged from Moon's lap. The black cat stretched lazily.
"It certainly looks cold."
"Good."
Kev glared.
Gret grinned.
Toivo laughed.
Far below them enormous fjords cut into the coastline. Toivo's eyes widened. Moon quietly joined them. The god's long black hair drifted behind him like silk. Silver eyes reflected distant starlight.
"The Sea Cliffs," Moon said softly.
Toivo nodded. He remembered the stories. The northern coast was carved by ancient glaciers during the First Age. Massive stone walls plunged directly into the sea. Entire villages perched upon cliff edges overlooking black northern waters. The fjords stretched for hundreds of miles. Beautiful. Deadly. Magnificent. Even Kev seemed impressed. The Dragon King continued northward. Hours passed. The landscape changed again. Now mountains dominated the horizon. Not ordinary mountains. Colossal ones. Ancient giants of stone and ice. Their peaks vanished into clouds. Glaciers flowed down their slopes like frozen rivers.
Moon gazed toward them silently.
"The Crown Mountains."
Toivo immediately recognized the name.
Every child in North Elyria knew it. The mountains divided the northern continent. Some peaks had never been climbed. Others were believed to hide ancient creatures older than human civilization itself. Legends claimed dragons slept within those mountains. Toivo glanced beneath his feet.
The Dragon King noticed.
"Not me."
Toivo looked disappointed.
The dragon looked offended.
"I said not me."
Gret laughed.
Kev laughed harder.
Even Moon smiled faintly.
The Dragon King grumbled for several minutes afterward. The stars slowly shifted overhead. Moonlight painted the snow-covered world below in silver and blue. Toivo could not stop staring. Everything felt larger here. The forests. The mountains. Even the sky. As though North Elyria belonged to another age. A forgotten world hidden beyond the edges of ordinary civilization. Moon seemed thoughtful. Perhaps nostalgic. Perhaps sad.
Toivo noticed the expression.
"Have you been here before?"
Moon looked toward him.
The answer came after a long silence.
"Long ago."
Gret raised an eyebrow.
"How long?"
Moon considered.
"Before your kingdoms existed."
The silence that followed lasted several seconds.
Then Gret simply nodded.
"Fair enough."
Toivo laughed.
Moon looked mildly confused. Far ahead something appeared. A faint green light dancing across the horizon. Then another. Then dozens. Curtains of emerald light stretched across the heavens. Moving. Flowing. Dancing among the stars. The northern lights. Toivo smiled. The aurora. He remembered sitting beside campfires listening to elders speak of spirits dancing in the sky. The green lights reflected beautifully within Moon's silver eyes. Thousands of fairies emerged from his shadow. Tiny winged beings made of moonlight. They danced happily among the aurora. Silver and emerald light mingled across the heavens. The sight was breathtaking. Even the Dragon King slowed slightly. For a moment nobody spoke. Nobody needed to. The world itself spoke for them. Then Moon's expression changed. Only slightly. But Toivo noticed. Moon was looking farther north. Far beyond the mountains. Far beyond the forests. Toward something hidden. Something waiting. Something ancient. Toivo followed his gaze. He could see nothing. Yet a strange feeling settled over him. As though unseen eyes watched from beyond the horizon. The Dragon King felt it too. His golden eyes narrowed. The fairies grew quieter. Even Kev stopped joking. North Elyria was beautiful. But something else waited there. Something powerful. Something old.
Far away, beyond endless forests and frozen mountains, a king slept within a crystal coffin beneath a palace of ice. And somewhere else, in a black tower hidden among swamps and darkness, shadow wolves gathered beneath a crown of night. The hunt had not ended. It had only begun. The Dragon King flew onward through the northern sky. And beneath the dancing aurora, the heroes crossed into a land older than memory.
A land beyond the world they knew.
A land called North Elyria.
