Tower of Thors Tower of Fangs Volume IV The White King Chapter 38

Volume IV The White King

ARC VI  THE PARTING

Chapter 38  Angel's Egg

The laughter slowly faded. The courtyard became quiet again. Birds sang softly among blooming branches. Sunlight filtered through silver leaves. Moon fairies drifted lazily through the air. Everything felt peaceful. Too peaceful. As though the world itself knew this moment mattered. Moon turned. Toward Toivo. Immediately the young northman stopped breathing. Not literally. It only felt that way. Those jet-black eyes found him. Dark as midnight. Endlessly deep. The silver hidden within them shimmered faintly. And suddenly nothing else existed. Not the castle. Not the kingdom. Not the world. Only Moon.

Moon looked at him quietly. For several long moments. As though considering something. As though deciding something. Then unexpectedly Moon stepped closer. Very close. Close enough for Toivo to smell the faint scent of moonflowers and strawberries that always seemed to follow him. Close enough to see every strand of black hair. Close enough to see silver appearing within those dark eyes. Toivo's heart hammered violently. Then Moon raised his hand. Toivo froze. The celestial god's fingers gently settled atop his head. And ruffled his blonde hair. Once. Softly. Affectionately. The gesture lasted only seconds. Yet Toivo felt like his entire world had stopped. His heart nearly exploded. Part of him loved it. Loved it so much it physically hurt. Because Moon had touched him. Voluntarily. For the first time. Not healing. Not guiding. Not saving. Simply touching him. The gesture felt warm. Gentle. Real. And it made something inside Toivo ache. Because another part of him hated it. Hated it with equal intensity. Because it felt like something a father might do. Or an older brother. Or someone comforting a child. Not a man. Not someone Moon saw as an equal. Not someone Moon could ever Toivo immediately crushed the thought. Yet it remained. Painful. Sharp. Because he wanted more. Wanted impossible things. Wanted Moon to see him differently. Wanted...No. The realization hurt too much. Moon lowered his hand. Then reached into his robes. A small silver object appeared. Beautiful. Delicate. Ancient. It resembled an egg-shaped cage. Tiny silver bars curved gracefully around its surface. Small wings extended from either side. Feathered. Elegant. Divine. The entire pendant shimmered with soft moonlight. Toivo stared. Then noticed something inside. A tiny cherub. Sleeping. Curled peacefully. No larger than his thumb. Its tiny wings wrapped around its body. Its eyes remained closed. Its chest rose and fell slowly. Dreaming. Waiting. The sight stole everyone's breath. Even the White King looked surprised. Moon carefully placed the pendant around Toivo's neck. The silver chain settled against his chest. Warm. Alive. The sleeping cherub glowed softly. Moon looked directly into Toivo's eyes. Blue meeting black. Ocean meeting night. The moment felt strangely intimate. Painfully intimate. Then Moon spoke.

"One day..."

His voice carried the softness of moonlight.

"...it will awaken."

The tiny cherub shifted slightly within its silver egg. Still sleeping. Still dreaming. Moon continued.

"When it does..."

Silver shimmered within his eyes.

"...protect it. As it will protect you"

Toivo lowered his gaze toward the pendant. The Angel's Egg. The tiny sleeping creature. The warmth radiating from it. And somehow he understood. This wasn't merely a treasure. It was trust. A responsibility. A promise. Perhaps even a future. When Toivo finally looked up again Moon was still watching him. Quietly. Gently. And for one brief moment the pain of love and the joy of love became the same thing. The Angel's Egg glowed faintly against his chest. Like a tiny moon. Like a sleeping star. Waiting for the day it would finally awaken.
