Chapter 10 Guardian Protocol
The castle was dying. Every corridor that had once echoed with music, laughter, and the footsteps of servants now rang with screams and clashing steel. Smoke drifted through the grand halls like ghostly rivers. Paintings of House Várhegyi's ancestors burned upon the walls. Crimson carpets became stained with ash and blood. The once-proud fortress atop the green hill had become a tomb. Eight-year-old Bálint Várhegyi ran. His polished black shoes slipped across marble floors dusted with broken stone. His silver-blond hair, usually neatly combed by the castle maids every morning, now clung messily to his soot-covered face. His elegant navy-blue noble tunic embroidered with silver thread had been torn at one shoulder. Tiny scratches covered his hands where he had climbed over fallen furniture. His breathing came in short, panicked gasps. He no longer knew where his mother was. He no longer knew if his father still lived. Every scream outside sounded closer than the last. Behind him... Heavy footsteps echoed through the corridor. Boots. Not the armored boots of House Várhegyi. Different. Measured. Confident. The invaders had entered the castle itself. Bálint pressed himself against a stone pillar. Three Baalanian soldiers marched past. Their bronzed skin glistened beneath flickering torchlight. Black desert robes flowed beneath layered black lamellar armor. Each wore black cloth wrapped around the lower half of his face. Curved swords rested in their hands.
Their amber eyes searched every doorway.
"Find the heir."
"The commander wants the bloodline extinguished."
Bálint held his breath.
One soldier paused. He looked directly toward the pillar. For one terrifying moment... Their eyes almost met. Then distant shouting drew the soldiers away. They continued deeper into the castle. Only after they disappeared did Bálint dare breathe again. He remembered something. His father. Months earlier. They had been walking beneath the castle together.
Lord Adam Árpád had rested a hand upon his son's shoulder.
"If our house should ever fall..."
"...there is one place you must never forget."
He had pointed toward an ancient stone wolf carved into the wall of the lower library.
"Our ancestors prepared for every age."
"Even this one."
At the time...
Bálint had thought it was merely another family story.
Now...
It was his only hope. The library stood eerily silent. Bookshelves had collapsed. Thousands of ancient books littered the floor. Pages drifted through the smoky air like dying birds. A stained-glass window depicting the silver wolf of House Várhegyi had shattered, scattering colored glass across the room. Bálint hurried toward the stone carving. The wolf sat silently upon the wall. Its eyes seemed almost alive. Remembering his father's words... He placed his small trembling hand inside the wolf's open mouth.
Click.
Deep within the wall... Ancient gears awakened. Stone groaned. Dust fell from the ceiling. The entire bookshelf slowly slid aside. Behind it... Darkness. A narrow staircase spiraled downward into the earth. Cold air flowed upward. Unlike the smoke-filled castle... The air below smelled ancient. Clean. Stone. Metal. Time itself. Bálint hesitated. Behind him... The sounds of battle grew louder. He stepped into the darkness. The passage sealed behind him. Only pale blue crystals embedded within the walls illuminated the stairway. They glowed softly. As though sensing someone had returned after centuries. Each step descended farther beneath the castle. The sounds of war gradually disappeared. Silence replaced them. The staircase continued deeper. Then deeper still. Far below the castle foundations. Far below the crypts. Far below anything Bálint knew existed. The staircase finally opened into something enormous. Bálint froze. An underground city. Not built for people. Built for giants. The vaulted chamber stretched so far into darkness that even the glowing crystals could not reveal its end. Colossal stone pillars rose toward a ceiling lost in shadow. Ancient bridges crossed bottomless chasms. Massive brass gears larger than houses stood frozen in place. Enormous chains disappeared into darkness above. Thousands of glowing blue runes covered every wall. They pulsed slowly. Like a heartbeat. This place was older than House Várhegyi. Older than the kingdom. Older than history. The old world, before it ended and started a new. At the chamber's center stood an enormous circular platform. Upon it rested a single figure. Motionless. Waiting.
It was unlike anything Bálint had ever imagined. A giant forged of brass, black steel, and silver. Over three meters tall. Its broad shoulders resembled the towers of a fortress. Thousands of bronze rivets secured overlapping plates of impossibly ancient armor. Intricate gears rotated silently beneath protective plating. Massive gauntlets rested upon armored knees. Its helmet resembled that of an ancient knight, though far more elaborate. Two narrow eye slits remained dark. Its chest bore the crest of House Várhegyi the Silver Wolf beneath the Black Eclipse. Behind the giant stood an elegant black coffin decorated with silver dragons and ancient runes. It rested upright upon a stone pedestal as though awaiting its bearer.
Bálint approached slowly. His footsteps echoed through the impossible chamber. The giant never moved. Its silence felt almost sacred. At its feet lay a stone altar. Dust covered everything except a single silver handprint carved into its surface. Beneath it... Ancient words. Only members of House Várhegyi could read the old family script.
WHEN THE HOUSE STANDS...
THE GUARDIAN RESTS.
WHEN THE HOUSE FALLS...
THE GUARDIAN SHALL RISE.
Below those words...
One final instruction.
HEIR... PLACE YOUR HAND HERE.
Bálint stared at the inscription. His hand trembled violently.
Outside... His family was dying. His home was burning. He slowly placed his small hand upon the silver imprint. Nothing happened. For one long second... Silence.
Then
THOOM.
The entire chamber shook. Blue light surged through ancient runes. Massive gears began turning. Stone dust rained from the ceiling. Ancient machinery awakened after countless centuries of sleep. The giant's armored fingers twitched.
THOOM.
Its head slowly lifted. Ancient joints groaned. Its eyes ignited. Brilliant sapphire light filled the darkness. The chamber echoed with a deep mechanical voice. One unlike any human language. Ancient. Resonant. Powerful.
"...ARCANE CORE..."
A pause.
"...ONLINE."
More runes illuminated.
"...GUARDIAN DESIGNATION..."
"...ŐRÖK."
"...STATUS..."
"...DORMANT..."
"...FOR ONE THOUSAND..."
Its voice paused.
"...NINE HUNDRED..."
Another pause.
"...SEVENTY-TWO YEARS."
The giant slowly stood. Each movement sounded like mountains shifting. Dust cascaded from its shoulders. The enormous platform trembled beneath its weight. Standing fully upright... Its helmet nearly reached the chamber ceiling. The glowing eyes focused upon Bálint. The child instinctively stepped backward. The machine knelt instead. Slowly. Respectfully. Its massive right fist rested against the stone floor. An ancient salute.
Then its voice spoke again. Far softer.
"Bloodline confirmed."
"Heir recognized."
"Welcome..."
Another pause.
As though searching centuries-old memories.
"...Young Master Bálint Várhegyi."
Tears welled in Bálint's eyes.
"You... know my name?"
The automaton answered immediately.
"My purpose is to know."
Suddenly... A distant explosion echoed faintly through the stone above. The castle. The battle. His family.
Bálint looked upward.
"They're still fighting."
His voice cracked.
"They're... they're killing everyone..."
For the first time... The blue light within Őrök's eyes brightened. Ancient symbols across his armor ignited one after another. The chamber's runes responded. A deep chime echoed through the vault. The automaton turned toward the black coffin. With astonishing care for something so massive... He lifted it onto one broad shoulder. Silver runes glowed across its polished surface. Ancient locks remained sealed. If had something inside whatever slept within... Would remain undisturbed. For now. Őrök extended one enormous armored hand toward the frightened child. Not as a weapon. As protection. Bálint placed his tiny hand against the giant's metal fingers. The brass felt surprisingly warm. The automaton closed his hand gently around the boy. As though afraid even his strength might hurt him.
Then the ancient guardian spoke one final sentence.
"Guardian Protocol initiated."
"Primary Directive..."
"Protect the Heir."
With earth-shaking footsteps, Őrök turned toward the staircase leading back to the burning castle. Each step rang like thunder through the forgotten vault. After nearly two thousand years of silence... The Guardian of House Várhegyi marched to war once more.
Bálint Várhegyi stood frozen beneath towering stone arches, his silver-blond hair matted with dust and tears. His once-pristine noble clothing was torn from crawling through hidden passages. His black velvet coat, embroidered with the silver wolf of House Várhegyi, was stained with ash and blood. His gray eyes usually calm beyond his years were wide with horror. Above him... His home was dying. The screams of servants. The clash of steel. The roar of fire. Every sound echoed faintly through the stone ceiling. Beside him stood the enormous automaton. Nearly three and a half meters tall, Őrök resembled an ancient knight forged from brass, black steel, and enchanted iron. Layers of riveted armor covered his immense frame. Bronze gears turned beneath his shoulders with soft mechanical clicks. Ancient runes pulsed with blue light across his chest and gauntlets. His helmet resembled that of an old royal guardian. Only two glowing sapphire eyes looked out from beneath the visor. Across his broad back rested an elegant black coffin. Unlike an ordinary coffin, its polished obsidian surface reflected no light. Silver dragons wound across its sides. Ancient runes shimmered beneath the carved scales. Despite its enormous size... Ōrök carried it effortlessly. He slowly looked toward the ceiling.
His glowing eyes brightened.
"Hostile forces continue to occupy the manor."
His deep metallic voice echoed through the vault.
"Guardian Protocol remains active."
Bálint clenched his trembling fists.
"My father..."
"My mother..."
"I have to help them."
Without waiting for an answer, he ran toward the stone staircase leading upward.
Heavy footsteps followed.
THOOM.
THOOM.
THOOM.
Every step of the automaton shook the ancient passage.
At The Upper Hall The hidden staircase emerged behind an old tapestry inside the western corridor of Castle Várhegyi. The hallway no longer resembled home. Marble columns had collapsed. Paintings burned upon the walls. Smoke poured through shattered stained-glass windows. The crimson carpet was soaked with blood. Bodies lay everywhere. House guards. Servants. Knights. Several wore wounds made by curved desert blades.Others still clutched broken spears.
Bálint covered his mouth.
"...No..."
Footsteps echoed nearby. Voices speaking in a harsh foreign tongue. Three Baalanian warriors rounded the corner. Each possessed powerful muscular builds hardened by desert warfare. Their bronzed skin glistened beneath soot and sweat. Layers of flowing black desert robes covered black chainmail reinforced with leather armor. Black cloth veils concealed the lower halves of their faces, leaving only hard, watchful eyes visible.Curved shamshir swords rested in practiced hands.
One immediately spotted the blond child.
"There!"
"The noble heir!"
They charged.
Bálint instinctively stepped backward.
Before he could react
BOOM!
Ōrök stepped in front of him. One enormous gauntlet intercepted the first sword. The curved blade shattered. Fragments scattered across the corridor.
The Baalanian stared in disbelief.
"What"
The automaton moved. Inevitably. His massive fist struck the warrior squarely in the chest. The impact sounded like a battering ram striking a castle gate. The armored soldier flew backward, crashing through a stone wall. The remaining raiders attacked together. Steel rang against enchanted metal. Sparks showered the hallway. One sword scraped across Ōrök's shoulder, leaving only a shallow groove. Another struck his helmet. The ancient guardian did not even flinch. His left arm swept sideways. Two warriors were knocked from their feet like leaves before a storm. Before either could stand The giant planted one armored foot between them. The stone floor cracked beneath the weight. Neither warrior dared move again.
Silence returned.
Only the crackling fire remained.
Damage Assessment
Bálint stared.
"You..."
"You're incredible."
Ōrök slowly examined the fresh scratches upon his armor. Blue runes flickered. Tiny streams of silver light flowed across the damaged metal. The dents slowly disappeared. The cracked plates rejoined. Moments later... His armor looked almost untouched.
Bálint blinked.
"It repaired itself..."
Ōrök nodded.
"Self-restoration protocols active."
"Damage insignificant."
The young heir looked up in amazement.
"You don't even feel pain..."
The guardian was silent for a long moment.
Then answered quietly.
"Pain is irrelevant."
"Failure is not."
Bálint finally looked at the enormous black coffin resting upon the guardian's back. It seemed strangely beautiful. Its silver dragon carvings appeared almost alive beneath the flickering firelight.
"...Whose coffin is that?"
Ōrök turned his glowing gaze toward it. For the first time... His voice became almost reverent.
"The Blood Coffin."
"Portable resting chamber of Lord Győző Várhegyi."
Bálint frowned.
"...Who?"
The guardian answered without hesitation.
"Your ancestor."
"The First Lord of House Várhegyi."
Bálint shook his head.
"Our family history never mentioned"
"History forgot."
The words echoed heavily through the ruined corridor.
Ōrök gently rested one armored hand upon the coffin.
"Long before your kingdom existed..."
"Lord Győző united with a mortal woman."
"Together they founded House Várhegyi."
Bálint's eyes widened.
"...A vampire?"
The guardian inclined his head.
"Affirmative."
"Ancient Vampire."
"Protector of humanity."
Bálint stared in disbelief.
"But..."
"New World Vampires are monsters."
Ōrök looked directly at him.
"Some are."
"Some are not. Your ancestor is an Old world Vampire, not a New world Vampire "
He continued.
"Your blood carries only a small fragment of his immortal lineage."
"That is why your family possesses strength beyond ordinary humans."
Images flashed through Bálint's mind. His father's impossible strength. His own unnatural speed. Zoltán lifting stones larger than horses. Everything... Finally made sense.
They continued walking through smoke-filled corridors while Ōrök spoke. His voice sounded less like a machine...And more like someone remembering old friends.
"House Várhegyi was never created to rule."
"It was created to protect."
They passed broken statues and burning banners.
"Whenever invaders threatened Central Elyria..."
"...your family stood between them and the innocent."
They descended another staircase leading toward the inner courtyard.
"Bandits."
"Monsters."
"Foreign conquerors."
His sapphire eyes narrowed.
"Baalanians."
The word carried centuries of memory.
"This duty has endured for generations."
Bálint looked down at his trembling hands.
"Father knew..."
"He never told us."
Ōrök answered softly.
"He wished you to know peace before war."
A terrible realization struck Bálint.
His face turned pale.
"...Zoltán."
He stopped walking.
"My brother."
"He wasn't in the castle."
"He wasn't with Mother."
His heartbeat quickened. Then he remembered. Every week... Sometimes every day... His younger brother disappeared into the family mausoleum.
The servants always laughed.
"Young Lord Zoltán is visiting his imaginary grandfather again."
The maids refused to enter the crypt after sunset. Some claimed they heard whispers. Others swore they saw bats flying from beneath the old stone doors. But Zoltán never seemed afraid. He always smiled afterward.
"He talks to someone," Bálint whispered.
"He always said Grandfather listened."
"I thought..."
"I thought he was pretending."
Ōrök stopped walking.
His glowing eyes met Bálint's. For several long seconds... Neither spoke.
Finally, the guardian gave a slow nod.
"He was not pretending."
Bálint froze.
"...What?"
Ōrök turned toward the castle gardens beyond the shattered doorway. Far beyond them stood the ancient family mausoleum. Half hidden among towering oaks. Its black stone doors were still closed. Smoke drifted around its weathered statues. Hundreds of bats circled silently overhead.
The guardian's voice became solemn.
"Lord Győző rests beneath that mausoleum."
"If Young Lord Zoltán sought refuge..."
"...there is no safer place in all of House Várhegyi."
A distant scream echoed through the burning estate. The battle above was not yet over. Bálint gripped his fists until his knuckles turned white. Then he looked toward the ancient crypt.
"I know where he is."
"We have to reach him."
Ōrök stepped beside the young heir, his immense frame casting a protective shadow over the boy. His arcane core flared with brilliant blue light. He tightened his grip on the Blood Coffin strapped across his back.
"Guardian Protocol updated."
Primary Objective: Protect Heir Bálint Várhegyi.
Secondary Objective: Recover Young Lord Zoltán Várhegyi.
Mission Status: Active.
Together, the last heir of House Várhegyi and its eternal guardian strode through the burning castle toward the ancient mausoleum, unaware that beneath its silent stone floor, something older than kingdoms had already begun to awaken.
