ARC 5 - COLLAPSE
Chapter 13 - The Swarm
Facility K-27 died screaming.
The underground complex shook apart beneath thousands of tons of collapsing steel while emergency sirens howled through the dark like wounded animals. Entire corridors caved inward. Fire rolled through ventilation shafts. Lights flickered between red and black as backup generators failed one after another.
And below the facility
Something had awakened the swarm.
The lower blast doors exploded upward.
Mutants flooded into the chamber like a living tidal wave.
Not dozens.
Hundreds.
Massive deformed creatures crawled across walls and ceilings while screaming infected corpses staggered behind them in endless numbers. Zombies clawed through broken ventilation shafts. Mutants smashed through collapsing barricades using raw strength.
The facility had become a slaughterhouse.
“CONTACT ALL SIDES!” Elias roared.
Gunfire erupted instantly.
Blue tracer rounds shredded through charging enemies while Varka Holt’s rotary cannon thundered so loudly it shook the chamber floor.
Bodies exploded apart.
Still they came.
The zombies ignored the mutants completely.
The mutants ignored the zombies.
Both attacked humanity with absolute hatred.
“THAT’S TOO MANY TARGETS!” Orion shouted as drones spiraled overhead firing suppressive bursts into the swarm.
One mutant leaped nearly twenty feet through the air before Titus Cain intercepted it mid-charge.
CRASH.
The massive Steelborn slammed his riot shield forward hard enough to break the creature’s spine against a steel pillar.
Another mutant immediately replaced it.
Then three more.
Titus didn’t move.
Didn’t retreat.
The giant defender simply planted himself in front of the squads like a fortress made flesh.
“Hold,” he said calmly.
The corridor behind him filled with gunfire.
Raze Volkov laughed like a madman while his rotary cannon flooded entire hallways with death.
“COME ON THEN!”
The massive Steelborn walked directly into the swarm firing nonstop.
Mutants tore apart beneath the torrent of rounds.
Zombies disintegrated.
Walls collapsed.
Blood painted the steel corridors black.
Then one mutant survived.
A gigantic armored creature burst through the gunfire and tackled Raze through a security barrier.
Both disappeared into smoke and debris.
“RAZE!” Axel shouted.
A second later the wall exploded outward as Raze hurled the mutant’s corpse across the chamber while laughing hysterically.
“THAT ALL YOU GOT?!”
Another tremor shook the facility violently.
The third coffin slammed again.
CLANG.
Everyone froze briefly.
Even Einar looked uneasy now.
Then the lights died completely.
Darkness swallowed the chamber.
For one horrible second
Nothing existed except breathing.
Then silver eyes opened in the blackness.
The Fairy moved.
Thousands of shadow crows erupted into existence around him in an explosion of black wings.
The darkness itself came alive.
The crows flooded through the chamber like a living storm, tearing into mutants with supernatural fury. Creatures vanished beneath spinning clouds of claws and feathers while screams echoed through collapsing corridors.
The Fairy drifted silently above the battlefield untouched.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
Every movement looked graceful enough to belong in a dream.
Every death around him looked like a nightmare.
One mutant lunged toward Lucien from behind.
The Fairy appeared instantly between them.
A pale hand touched the mutant’s face.
The creature froze solid.
Then shattered into black ice.
Lucien stared speechlessly.
“…Thank you?”
The Fairy tilted his head slightly.
Like he didn’t understand the phrase.
Then vanished again into the chaos.
Meanwhile
The Death Reaper became a monster.
The massive vampiric creature crashed into the mutant horde with horrifying brutality. Black cloak twisting like living smoke around its body, the creature ripped through enemies using claws, teeth, and raw impossible strength.
A mutant the size of a truck swung toward it
The Death Reaper caught the arm.
Snapped it off.
Then beat the creature to death using its own limb.
Even Steelborn paused watching it fight.
“Jesus Christ,” Kael muttered.
The Death Reaper roared.
The sound shook the chamber harder than the collapsing facility itself.
Then zombies swarmed onto its back.
The creature responded by smashing itself backward through a concrete wall hard enough to flatten everything attached to it.
Blood exploded across the corridor.
The Reaper emerged from the rubble carrying a mutant by the skull.
Then crushed the head in one hand.
Cassian watched silently.
“…That thing enjoys this.”
Einar answered quietly:
“Yes.”
Elsewhere in the chamber
Nero Valek aka Grim Hound fought like a demon himself.
The pale Steelborn moved through the swarm with terrifying precision, combat blades flashing through necks and skulls while his cybernetic eyes tracked targets faster than humanly possible.
One zombie lunged.
Nero caught its jaw barehanded and twisted hard enough to tear the head free.
Another mutant charged him from behind.
Noctis Veil the Wraith appeared silently out of nowhere.
The black-clad executioner intercepted the creature mid-sprint.
Then folded it in half with one brutal strike.
The mutant’s spine snapped audibly.
Wraith vanished back into shadow immediately.
Milo stared briefly.
“…I’m starting to think he’s not normal.”
“None of us are,” Serik answered while his electrified chain-blades carved through incoming zombies.
The lower levels collapsed entirely.
Through the broken floors beneath them, endless movement became visible below.
Thousands of infected.
Thousands more mutants.
The entire underground hive was rising.
Dr. Voss looked horrified.
“Oh God…”
Darius grabbed her violently before another tremor knocked her down.
“How many experiments were down here?”
The scientist hesitated.
Wrong answer.
Darius’ cybernetic eye narrowed.
“How many?”
Her voice cracked.
“…All of them.”
Silence hit harder than gunfire.
Then the floor beneath the extraction chamber cracked apart.
Massive steel supports bent downward with screaming metal.
The facility was dying.
And the swarm was rising with it.
Einar looked toward the unopened coffin again.
The scratching inside had stopped completely now.
That somehow felt worse.
Then
A deep sound echoed upward from below the collapsing facility.
Not mutant.
Not zombie.
Something older.
The Fairy immediately stopped moving.
Every shadow crow froze mid-flight.
The Death Reaper slowly turned toward the sound.
And for the first time
Fear appeared on both creatures’ faces.
Einar’s expression darkened instantly.
“…No.”
The chamber floor exploded upward.
A colossal mutant erupted from beneath the facility.
Thirty feet tall.
Covered in armored flesh and exposed bone.
Dozens of glowing red eyes opened across its body.
Its roar shook the entire complex.
The swarm immediately stopped.
Every mutant in the chamber turned toward the gigantic creature.
Then bowed.
Darius stared upward.
“…That’s their leader.”
The monster looked down at humanity.
At the vampires.
At the coffin.
Then it smiled with far too many teeth.
And the facility finally began to collapse for real.
