The Black Oasis of the Demon Sultans

The knight and the lunar deity on the rocs back flew over the vast seemingly endless sands

The roc’s enormous wings carried them high above the endless desert.

Below, the dunes rolled endlessly beneath silver moonlight like an ocean made of ash and gold. Wind rushed through the obsidian knight’s black cape while the lunar deity sat close beside him upon the creature’s massive back, glowing softly against the storm-dark sky.

For the first time in days, there was peace.

The fairies danced around them in tiny spirals of light.

Then the sky screamed.

A blast of dark energy tore through the clouds without warning.

The roc cried out in agony.

Black fire exploded across one of its wings.

The creature spiraled violently downward.

“The roc!” the deity shouted.

The knight grabbed him instantly as the heavens twisted around them. Sandstorms rushed upward while the wounded beast plummeted toward the desert below like a falling star.

The deity stretched both hands toward the creature.

Silver moonlight burst outward.

The roc’s massive form slowly dissolved into glowing feathers and drifting light until only a small radiant egg remained floating within the deity’s hands.

The deity held it carefully against his chest.

“Sleep,” he whispered softly.

The egg dimmed peacefully.

Then the two of them crashed into the sands below.

When the storm settled, they found themselves standing before a cursed oasis.

Black palm trees twisted upward like skeletal claws around glowing dark waters that reflected no stars. Silk tents of crimson and gold surrounded the oasis in enormous circles while floating lanterns drifted through thick incense smoke.

Music echoed softly through the night.

But it was wrong.

Too slow.

Too empty.

The fairies around the deity trembled nervously.

The obsidian knight immediately drew his blade.

Figures emerged from the tents.

Demon sultans.

Tall and elegant, dressed in luxurious embroidered silks and golden jewelry, yet their eyes burned with infernal fire beneath jeweled veils. Some rode monstrous lion-beasts with glowing fangs. Others floated above the sands surrounded by black smoke and burning embers.

One smiled coldly.

“The moon deity arrives at last.”

The knight stepped protectively before the deity.

“Stay behind me.”

The sultan laughed softly.

“How loyal.”

Golden firelight flickered across obsidian armor while the deity’s glowing white robes flowed gently in the warm desert wind. Tiny fairies hovered around his shoulders like living stars against the darkness.

Another demon sultan lowered his hood.

His face beneath was not human.

Cracked obsidian skin.

Rows of glowing eyes.

“You carry heaven’s light,” the creature hissed toward the deity. “And we hunger for it.”

Suddenly the oasis waters exploded.

Massive shadow creatures rose from beneath the black surface—serpentine beasts covered in molten scales and dripping dark smoke.

The knight attacked first.

His black blade carved through the nearest monster with a burst of sparks and shadow-fire. The creature collapsed into the sands shrieking while more demons surged forward from the tents.

The oasis became chaos.

The knight fought like living darkness beneath swirling lantern light, cutting through monstrous beasts and demonic warriors alike. Yet every enemy he struck seemed replaced by two more emerging from the shadows.

Then chains of black fire shot toward the deity.

The knight turned instantly

but he was too far away.

The deity lifted one glowing hand.

Before the chains could reach him, hundreds of tiny winged fairies surged forward in a blazing swarm.

The darkness shattered.

The fairies exploded into radiant silver light around the demons, burning through infernal magic like sunlight piercing fog. Tiny glowing wings filled the oasis in dazzling spirals while the creatures screamed and staggered backward.

The demon sultans recoiled in horror.

“The star-fairies…” one whispered.

The deity floated slowly above the oasis waters now, white robes glowing brighter beneath the night sky while ribbons of moonlight spiraled around him like celestial rivers.

The fairies answered his power.

Thousands emerged from the palms, the waters, even the drifting sands themselves.

Tiny lights.

Ancient lights.

Guardians of forgotten moon temples.

The demons panicked.

The fairies swarmed through the oasis like a living constellation, burning away shadows wherever they flew. Silk tents erupted into silver flames. Infernal beasts dissolved into ash beneath glowing wings.

The obsidian knight looked upward through drifting smoke.

And once again, the deity looked less like a wandering exile…

…and more like a god.

The largest demon sultan roared and lunged toward the deity with a curved blade of black fire.

The knight intercepted him instantly.

Steel collided with infernal flame.

The impact split the sands apart.

The demon smiled cruelly. “You would die for him?”

The knight’s voice was cold beneath the helm.

“Without hesitation.”

Then he drove his sword through the demon’s chest.

The sultan disintegrated into burning ash.

Silence slowly fell over the oasis.

The black waters became calm again.

Remaining demons fled into the dunes screaming as glowing fairies chased them into the darkness like falling stars.

At last, only the knight and the deity remained beside the ruined oasis.

The deity descended slowly back to the sands.

Moonlight softened around him once more.

The knight sheathed his blade and immediately checked the glowing egg still cradled safely in the deity’s arms.

“It still lives,” the deity whispered.

The knight nodded quietly.

Then the deity looked up at him with tired silver eyes.

“You protected me again.”

The knight hesitated.

Warm desert wind moved gently through glowing ribbons and black fabric alike.

Finally, he reached up carefully and brushed ash from the deity’s sleeve with armored fingers.

“It is the only thing that has ever felt right.”

For a moment neither moved.

Around them, the tiny fairies floated softly above the dark oasis waters like drifting stars.

Then one fairy suddenly dimmed.

Another followed.

The deity’s expression changed immediately.

He looked toward the far horizon where the desert met darkness.

Something enormous was moving beneath the sands again.

Closer this time
